What's a recommendation? [top]

A recommendation is just what it sounds likes - recommending a story to other readers, if you think it's worth reading for whatever reason. In terms of this archive, the recommendation module allows people to link to stories that are currently archived off-site (meaning NOT within this archive). Off-site can mean FanFiction.net, LiveJournal, a personal website, or a variety of other options.

Who can post recommendations? [top]

Only current registered members of the site (this includes authors) are able to post recommendations. I have disabled the option of 'anonymous' (or non-members) recs for the time being. If you'd like to make a recommendation, you will need to be a member of the site. (See FAQ: Accounts & Passwords)

How do I view recs on the site? [top]

To view all current recommendations listed on this site, the easiest way is to click the Recommendations link in the navigation menu above.

How do I make a recommendation? [top]

There are two ways. The easiest option is to log in to your account; in the Account Information area click on the link called "Manage Recommedations". The page it brings up will list all the current recs you've made (if any) as well as have a link at the bottom called "Add a Recommendation". The page that leads to is where you enter all the rec information.

The other way to post a recommendation is via the Browse link in the top navigation menu. Go through to the "Recommendations" page; as well as listing all current recommendations on the site, there is a link right towards the top called "Add a Recommendation". That will take you to the same page as noted above where you can enter all the rec information.

What kinds of recs are allowed? [top]

As this is a Will/Elizabeth fanfiction archive, we accept recommendations that focus on the relationship (preferably romantic relationship) of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. However, there are exceptions. For instance if it's pre-romance - e.g. when they were kids - then those are definitely acceptable as well.

What kinds of recs aren't allowed? [top]

Generally speaking...

  • general Pirates fics that don't focus on the W/E relationship
  • slash fiction
  • fiction about the actors/actresses (ie RPF)
  • crossovers with certain author fandoms (see below for full details)

It's best to keep in mind that this is a 'shipper archive for Will & Elizabeth so it should be fairly obvious what we're looking for!

Note: J/E/W relationship fic recs won't generally be accepted however the odd exception may be made depending on the content and quality. The site administrators reserve the right to accept or reject these on a case-by-case basis.

I want to make a recommendation. What information do I need? [top]

You will need all the same information as you would if you were posting a story for archiving on the site. The Characters, Ratings, Warnings, Timeline and Category (Genre) fields all still need to be completed (especially if there are warnings involved). Essentially, there are two differences between posting a story and posting a recommendation: 1) you don't need to cut and paste the story, only include the off-site link where the story is linked to, and 2) the recommender is able to include their own comments about why they think this story should be recommended and/or read.

As well as general story information noted above, you MUST include something in the Recommender's Comments: field. This is where you tell other readers why the story is so good, why you enjoy it so much, WHY you feel this story should be recommended.

Any recommendations that do not complete all fields will be deleted from the queue and need to be re-submitted before they will appear on the site.

Do I need the author's permission to recommend their story? [top]

Permission is not required in order to recommend a story. However, it's common courtesy to let the author know that their story has been recommended. Authors love feedback and knowing that their work is liked/adored/appreciated. It gives them a nice little boost to know their work has been recognised so while you don't NEED the permission, it's nice to drop them an email and let them know the story has been recommended on this site.

Do I need the archivist's permission to link to a story? [top]

If a story is linked on a personal archive (by personal I mean run by an individual or group of people who are NOT the author) then approval will need to be sought to link to the story. The reasoning for this is that linking directly to a story on someone else's personal space can have an impact on that archivist's bandwidth (ie data) costs.

What sort of sites don't require permission to link?

  • FanFiction.net
  • LiveJournal
  • Message Boards/Communities

If you're unsure about what does or doesn't need permission, best thing is to contact the site admin here and ask for clarification or help.

I added a recommendation but it's not showing in the site listings. Why? [top]

This is a moderated archive. Much like submitting a story for archiving, the recommendations also require validation before they show up in the site listings. Once the recommendation has been submitted by you, it waits in a queue until the site admin can validate (ie approve) the rec. Once the rec is validated, it will show up on the site.

Who do I contact if I have a problem or any questions? [top]

You can e-mail the site administrator via the contact form.
